On June 10, 2014, Berkeley’s City Council adopted a Minimum Wage Ordinance which took effect October 1, 2014 with an increase in minimum wage to $10.00 an hour. On October 1, 2015, the ordinance increased the minimum wage to $11.00 and within a few weeks on October 1, 2016, it will increase to $12.53 an hour. Regardless of where the business is located, an employer must pay the Berkeley minimum wage to their employees who perform at least two hours of work in Berkeley.
Although Governor Jerry Brown signed the SB 3 into law earlier this year, increasing the California minimum wage to $15, local minimum wage ordinances have been enacted throughout California over the past few months.
