IRS Extends Deadline for 1095 ACA Forms

On Jan 3, 2018

On Friday, December 22, the IRS released an official announcement that it has extended the 2018 deadline for employers to provide employees their 2017 health coverage information. The original January 31, 2018 due date has been extended to March 2, 2018 to provide Forms 1095-B or 1095-C to their employees. This 30-day extension is automatic and does not have to be requested by employers. As mandated by law, insurers, self-insuring employers, other coverage providers, and applicable large employers must provide these statements to their employees or covered individuals containing the information about health coverage provided to them.

It is important to note that the due dates for filing 2017 information returns to the IRS have not changed. The 2018 dates to file this information with the IRS are:

  • Feb. 28 for paper filers
  • April 2 for electronic filers

What does this mean for employees?

Due to this extension, employees might not receive these forms before they begin to file their 2017 individual income tax returns. However, employees can still use other information about their health care coverage and don’t have to wait for Forms 1095-B or 1095-C if they choose to file before the forms are received.

Reminders for PAYDAY Clients

The sign up period to enroll in PAYDAY’s ACA Reporting Service for the 2017 tax year has closed. If you are already signed up for PAYDAY’s ACA Reporting Service, due to the high volume of clients that we are supporting, it is important that you still meet all internal deadlines provided by PAYDAY to ensure timely filing and avoid potential fees.
