IRS2Go Mobile App for Tax Filing UpdatesThe IRS has emphasized their commitment to getting taxpayers the information they want about tax filing, tax law changes, products, and services. The government tax agency assists taxpayers through its telephone helpline, on the Internet, at walk-in sites and with volunteer income tax return preparers. Each year the IRS provides taxpayers with information on the most recent changes to tax forms, filing instructions, and publications, as well as changes to tax laws affecting individual and business tax payers. This information has been available on their website, in printed publications, and by telephone assistance, but in 2011, the IRS went mobile with an app called IRS2Go, which allows taxpayers to get tax updates and their refund statuses. IRS commissioner Doug Shulman announced it as modernizing the agency and offering tax information in innovative ways.

Now there’s an updated version of the IRS’s smartphone app IRS2Go that lets you do almost everything you’d do on the IRS website on your phone. While the 2011 version simply enabled taxpayers to check refunds and get tax information, the new version adds more user-friendly features, including videos from the IRS YouTube channel, latest IRS news about new programs and legislation and requests for tax records. And it’s all available in both English and Spanish.

Resources on the 2011 app included:

  • Refund Status: Taxpayers have been able to check their federal refund status with the mobile app since 2011.
  • Tax Updates: IRS2Go app users were able to get IRS tips and reminders by email to help with yearly tax filing.

Resources on the updated app include:

  • IRS News: The new app lets users quickly access the most recent updates on the news pages in English and Spanish.
  • Refund Status: The new app lets users check their electronically filed refunds just 24 hours after the IRS sends the receipts for filings or four weeks after a paper return is mailed.
  • Order Tax Records: Taxpayers can now order their tax account or tax return transcript from their mobile devices.
  • IRS Videos: Taxpayers can watch the IRS YouTube channel videos about tax topics on their smartphones in English, Spanish, and American Sign Language.
  • Social IRS: Taxpayers can follow the IRS Twitter newsfeeds, @IRSnews or @IRSenEspanol, for tax information including changes in tax laws and information about important IRS programs.
  • Tax Updates: Users can now get daily tax tips emailed to them during tax season to help with tax preparation and planning. Subjects include child tax credits, free tax help, education credits, and other tax topics.

One of the main benefits of using the IRS2Go app is reduced wait time on phone calls for tax filings questions. Employers and payroll processors can use the IRS2Go app to stay up-to-date on the latest changes in tax law that apply to payroll taxes, both for processing payroll and to inform and educate their employees. Employer payroll administrators can use the app to find out about new tax forms, mileage rates and maximum annual deductions for benefits such as flexible spending accounts and health savings accounts. They can pass on information that they receive from tips and updates to employees to help them understand their taxes, tax laws and the things that impact tax filing.

Where to Get the IRS2Go App

Apple iPhone or iTouch users can download the free IRS2Go app from the iTunes app store. Android device users can download it from the Google Play store.

Some users have expressed concern about the security of tax and personal identification data on smartphones and inaccurate information posted about refund dates with the app, but the IRS assures users that improvements have since been made.
